Introducing Würth Elektronik’s New SMT Digital Isolators: A Leap in Electrical Isolation Technology

Würth Elektronik has announced the release of a new product family: Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) digital isolators, available both with and without an integrated power supply. These components represent a significant advancement in the field of electrical isolation, designed to transmit digital signals while providing galvanic isolation. This technology is crucial in preventing potential differences and safeguarding people and sensitive circuits from high voltages.

High Compatibility and Enhanced Transmission Rates

The new digital isolators are engineered to be pin-compatible with the most commonly used digital isolators in the market, ensuring easy integration into existing systems. They stand out with their capability to achieve superior transmission rates of up to 150 Mbps, coupled with exceptional interference immunity, making them highly effective in various applications.

Applications of Digital Isolators

These digital isolators are ideal for applications requiring fast and robust signal isolation. They are particularly suited for high-speed applications with data rates reaching 150 Mbps. The isolators, approved under UL 1577, also exhibit high immunity to system noise with a Common Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI) of ±150 kV/µs. Their use extends to isolating communication buses, industrial switch-mode power supplies, motor controllers, testing and measurement systems, battery management systems, and photovoltaic inverters.

Standard Versions of the Digital Isolator

The standard models, named WPME-CDIS (Capacitive Digital Isolator Standard), are available in the online catalog. They come in SOIC-8NB (4.9 x 3.9 x 1.5 mm) and SOIC-16WB (10.3 x 7.5 x 2.5 mm) designs, offering two and four-channel configurations with default output high or low. These models support data rates up to 150 Mbps and operate effectively within an ambient temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. The isolation voltage is 3.75 kVRMS for two-channel models and 5 kVRMS for four-channel models.

Models with Integrated Power Supply

Under the name WPME-CDIP (Capacitive Digital Isolator Powered), these isolators integrate a DC/DC converter in a SOIC-16WB design (10.3 x 7.5 x 2.5 mm). They offer various four-channel configurations and support data rates of up to 100 Mbps. The integrated DC/DC converter provides up to 650 mW of isolated power at an output voltage of 3.3 V or 5 V, with an isolation voltage of 5 kVRMS. Additionally, these components exhibit excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), meeting the minimum conducted and radiated electromagnetic interference standards of EN55032 Class B / CISPR-32.

Impact on the Electrical Component Market

With the introduction of these SMT digital isolators, Würth Elektronik sets a new standard in the realm of electrical isolation technology. The combination of safety features, high data transmission rates, and compatibility with existing systems positions these isolators as a key component in advancing the safety and efficiency of various electrical systems. As the industry gravitates towards more sustainable and safe energy solutions, Würth Elektronik’s innovations like these SMT digital isolators are poised to play a pivotal role in this transition.
