Renesas Introduces New Family of Motor Driver ICs with Advanced Technologies

Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a leading provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced a new family of motor driver ICs specifically designed for brushless DC (BLDC) motor applications. These ICs feature Renesas’ groundbreaking technologies that enable motors to deliver full torque at zero speed without sensors, a first in the industry.

Revolutionizing BLDC Motor Systems

The new motor driver ICs enhance the performance of sensorless BLDC motor systems. They offer higher horsepower and speed at a given torque, and simultaneously improve power consumption, reliability, and cost-efficiency. The reduction in board space and component count further streamlines the design process.

New Motor Driver ICs with Integrated Technologies

Renesas is introducing three innovative motor driver ICs: the RAA306012 65V, 3-phase Smart Driver, the RAJ306101 integrating a 32-bit RX13T MCU, and the RAJ306102 integrating a 16-bit RL78/G1F MCU. These integrations offer significant benefits in terms of board space, cost, and reliability.

Enabling Full Torque Without Sensors

The ability to achieve full torque at zero speed without sensors is made possible through Renesas’ Enhanced Inductive Sensing (EIS) and Motor Rotor position Identification (MRI) technologies. EIS provides stable position detection at a standstill, while MRI is utilized at extremely low speeds. These patent-pending innovations mark a significant advancement in motor control technology.

Industry Impact and Customer Perspectives

Davin Lee, Vice President of the Advanced Analog Division at Renesas, emphasizes the multiple benefits of sensorless design, particularly in systems requiring full torque at zero speed. Peter Korošec, President and CEO at Domel Inc, a global motor supplier, expresses enthusiasm for implementing this sensorless technology in new products, citing improved size, cost, and reliability.

Features of the New Motor Driver ICs

  • High integration with drivers, power management, and current sensing.
  • Adaptive and adjustable dead time for enhanced efficiency.
  • Support for various motor control algorithms and extensive protection functions.

Winning Combinations from Renesas

Renesas has paired these new motor driver ICs with other components to offer Winning Combinations like Cordless Vacuum Cleaner and Cordless Leaf Blower. These combinations provide vetted system architectures for faster time-to-market solutions.

Availability and Evaluation Kits

The RAA306012, RAJ306101, and RAJ306102 are now available in QFN packages, with evaluation kits offered for each device. These new offerings demonstrate Renesas’ commitment to delivering innovative solutions that enhance BLDC motor applications across various industries.
