STMicroelectronics Introduces ASM330LHHXG1: A Breakthrough in Automotive IMUs

STMicroelectronics has unveiled the ASM330LHHXG1 inertial measurement unit (IMU) for automotive use. This new IMU integrates in-sensor artificial intelligence (AI) with enhanced low-power features. It operates reliably in harsh environments, thanks to its wide operating temperature range up to 125°C.

Innovative Design for Enhanced Performance

The ASM330LHHXG1 combines a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope. Its low power consumption, under 800µA when both sensors are active, reduces the overall power budget. This makes it ideal for always-aware applications. The in-sensor AI, utilizing a machine-learning core (MLC) and finite state machine (FSM), reduces the load on the host processor. This leads to efficient, low-latency event detection and classification.

Extended Temperature Range for Versatile Deployment

The unit’s broad temperature range allows for flexible placement in challenging environments. It is suitable for locations near engine components, under direct sunlight, or in areas with high on-board power dissipation.

Applications and Use-Cases

With its integrated MLC and FSM, the ASM330LHHXG1 is adept at handling applications requiring quick and deterministic responses with minimal power use. Its use-cases span navigation assistance, telematics, theft prevention, impact detection, and motion-activated functions.

Supporting Rapid Development

ST’s MEMS ecosystem facilitates swift evaluation, prototyping, and development. It leverages tools like Unico-GUI and AlgoBuilder, and sensor adapter boards (STEVAL-MKI243A). Engineers can also find application examples on ST’s GitHub repository, including tilt detection, towing, and vehicle-status monitoring.

Advanced Features and Operating Modes

The IMU offers dual operating modes to balance data-update rates and power consumption. Its accelerometer and gyroscope show remarkable stability over time and temperature variations. The accelerometer’s range is selectable up to ±16g, while the gyroscope can measure angular rates up to ±4000 degrees per second.

Qualifications and Availability

The ASM330LHHXG1 is AEC-Q100 qualified and currently in production. It comes in a 14-lead plastic LGA package. Prices start at $8.99 per unit for orders of 1,000 pieces.
