Skylo and Blues Introduce 9 Starnote Satellite IIoT Module

Category articles

In the past, we have highlighted the Quectel CC660D-LS IoT-NTN module, a product born out of the partnership between Quectel and Skylo. Additionally, we have also reported about the Qualcomm 212S and 9205S satellite modems, created in cooperation with Skylo. These modules, supporting IoT NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks), have proven to be valuable in a multitude of applications, ranging from sending texts and making voice calls to providing emergency services, especially in remote areas.

Recent Development

In a recent development, a new partnership between Skylo and Blues has led to the launch of Starnote, a comprehensive backup satellite module priced at just $49. Starnote aims to provide a backup satellite connection for circumstances when cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is not available. It is designed to work in harmony with the Notecard API.

Starnote Features

The Starnote module is equipped with an M.2 E-Key edge connector and a six-pin JST connector (on the reverse side of the PCB) to facilitate easy setup. It also provides options for external antennas through u.FL connectors. Moreover, it comes with 18KB of Skylo satellite data without any monthly charges. Based on Blues’ calculations, this amount of data will suffice for a year, given that a 50-byte message is sent daily.

Starnote Satellite IIoT Module Specifications

  • Integrated satellite and GPS antennas.
  • External antenna compatibility via u.FL connectors.
  • JSON API for Notecard integration.
  • M.2 Key E and six-pin JST connectors for versatile connections.
  • NTN modem with zero-touch setup.
  • Incorporates 18KB Skylo satellite data; no additional fees or subscriptions.

Variations

The Starnote offers two variations for connectivity: one with onboard satellite and GPS ceramic antennas for immediate use, and a smaller option that allows for external antennas via u.FL connectors, catering to different installation needs and preferences.

Technical Information

The Starnote module utilizes Skylo Satellite Coverage and supports 3GPP Rel-17 connectivity. However, after extensive research, it was challenging to find more technical details, such as the processor type, or detailed information on software and hardware support. While an API reference is available, it does not have a specific section for this module.

Notecarrier Boards

There are four types of Notecarrier boards: Notecarrier A, Notecarrier B, Notecarrier F, and Notecarrier Pi Hat. All four boards can support the Notecard modules like Cellular, Cell+Wifi, LoRa, and Starnote models, as they all support the M.2 E-Key.

Availability

The newly launched Starnote Satellite IIoT module has already sold out. However, Blues has created a waitlist on their website for those interested in purchasing the module at the introductory price of $49. For more details, you can check the press release on their website.
