Digital Isolator from STMicroelectronics Boosts Performance and Reliability Using New Thick-Oxide Galvanic Isolation Technology

STMicroelectronics has started volume production of this STISO621 dual-channel electronic isolator, starting a new set of high performance ICs for industrial uses and basic optocoupler replacement.

The STISO621 transfers information between two isolated domains at around 100Mbit/s, together with heartbeat under 3ns, leveraging ST’s 6kV thick-oxide galvanic-isolation technology. With two separate unidirectional channels, the system acts as a UART interface managing data in the following directions. Schmitt-trigger inputs to every channel ensure high noise immunity.

The supply voltages into both galvanically isolated sides of this STISO621 are independent of one another. Each has a large voltage range, permitting level translation between both 3.3V and 5.5V circuitry. Average common-mode passing resistance (CMTI) of both 65kV/µs shields the low-voltage side against large switching transients in harsh surroundings.

The STISO621 is appropriate to a vast array of consumer and industrial applications in power supplies, motor drives, yards, inverters, battery packs and appliances, and fieldbus isolators, size-critical multichannel isolation adapters, and basic isolation during industrial-automation systems. The plan is analyzed in light of VDE0884-10 along with UL 1577and the specifications commonly employed to isolation apparatus for high-voltage software.

The EVALSTISO62XV1 merchandise test board can be found to assist accelerate design conclusion in several programs. The EVALSTPM-3PHISO benchmark design, especially created for three-phase isolated metering-systems usage instances, can be available. It unites the STISO621 to different high voltage domains together with ST’s high-accuracy STPMS2 metering front-end IC and special firmware running in an STM32 microcontroller to calculate three-phase metrology and power-quality data.

Using a maximum functioning isolation voltage (VIOWM) of both 1200Vpeak, and large impulse-withstand voltage (VIOTM), galvanic insulation integrity has been preserved over time and through any system faults. Two bundle versions are available. From the SO8 narrow-body bundle with 4mm creepage and clearance, then the STISO621 includes VIOTM of all 4800V. The STISO621W at the SO8 wide-body bundle with 8mm creepage and clearance includes VIOTM of 6000V. High performance amount is ensured from -40°C into 125°C temperature array.

Even the STISO621 and STISO621W are equally in manufacturing, priced at $0.97 for orders of 1000 items. The EVALSTISO62XV1 can be found by ST and providers for $25.00. The EVALSTPM-3PHISO is 118.00.
