Motor-drive reference designs from STMicroelectronics include STSPIN32 and production-ready PCB

STMicroelectronics released two reference designs to make it easier to build complete industrial and home-appliance motor drive systems for compressors using the STSPIN32 motor control system-in-package. Each includes a motor controller, a three-phase converter to power the motor and an offline converter. Also included is a production-ready PCB design as well as motor-control firmware. The STEVAL -CTM011V1 is designed for general industrial compressors with 250W. While the STEVAL -CTM012V1 is suitable for home appliances and meets stringent eco design regulations, the STEVAL -CTM012V1 can be used in household appliances. Plug-and-play reference designs can be combined with a host system to drive a motor, and customers can fine-tune settings to achieve optimal performance.

They ensure an average efficiency of over 96.5%. The heart of every design is ST’s STSPIN32F0601Q Motor-Control SiP. It contains an STM32F031 Arm (r) Cortex(r-M0 microcontroller that allows you to tailor the motor control to your specific application needs, and a rugged 600V three phase gate driver for inverter. High-efficiency sensorless field orientation control (FOC) is included in the firmware. The SiP is a thermally efficient, compact quad flat no-lead (QFN), device that meets safety and reliability requirements. An 800V avalanche-rugged section and control logic make up the offline AC/DC converter. It is a VIPER122 analogue converter. Frequency jittering is used to prevent interference from other equipment. The converter’s inherent low power consumption and support of burst mode operation at light loads help it comply with all energy-saving regulations. Six rugged STGD5H60DF insulated gates bipolar transistors are used in the inverter stage for the 250W STEVAL–CTM011V1 reference model for industrial and general purpose applications. These transistors are designed to maximize efficiency at high switching frequencies and allow for smaller capacitive or magnetic components. Their low thermal resistance in the package enhances reliability, and tight parameter distribution allows for safe paralleling in high power applications. The STEVAL CTM012V1 home application reference design includes six STPOWER STD8N60DM2 600V DM2 power MOSFETs.

These boards are great for high-efficiency converters. They include phase-shift and zero-voltage (ZVS), phase-shift converters. This circuit-board design is production-ready, which means that it saves time and eliminates complex layouts and signal-routing issues. The board’s compact layout of 11.2cmx7.5cm is ideal for both industrial and consumer applications.
