TE Connectivity NanoRF optical modules offer more speed and functionality in small form factor

TE Connectivity (TE), the world’s leading company in connectivity and sensors introduces their NanoRF optical hybrid modules to the defense industry VPX-based embedded computers that need more capacity and frequency (RF) signaling. The new hybrid modules offer the highest density RF as well as optical connectivity in the most common connector module applications, such as radar electronic warfare (EW) missile guidance, and tactical communications, as well as any other applications that require a small footprint in which the use of high frequency RF or optical signals are crucial.

NanoRF’s optical hybrid modules’ cables mechanical transfer (MT) as well as edge mount transceivers offer additional flexibility and implementation options. Interchangeability and interoperability among VPX providers is made possible by different connector and slot profiles that are added to VITA 65.0 and VITA 65.0 as well as VITA 65.1 compatible backplanes as well as profiles at the board level. These NanoRF optical hybrid module is currently being defined within VITA 66.5, the VITA 66.5 Draft standard which is scheduled for release in 2022.

“The newly developed NanoRF optically hybrid components allow you to fulfill the requirements of an open systems architecture , while also providing an increased bandwidth and greater capability for RF signaling to C5ISR system,” said Clint Schlosser who is the product manager for the TE Aerospace, Defense and Marine division. “This new technology gives the defense industry with the flexibility, endurance and dependability that their ground and aerospace systems need.”

The TE’s design is strategic and includes floating inserts on the backplane’s side, which includes NanoRF contacts as well as optical MTs. This allows for precise aligning of the RF contact as well as MTs prior to engagement, which allows the highest amount of density inside the VPX slot.

“The NanoRF optical optical hybrid collection is the product of the close collaboration between TE’s fiber engineers,” said Schlosser. “As the demand for bandwidth and density continue to grow I expect the development of more novel solutions for customers to come in the near future.”

The connector modules come with the nominal frequency of 85 GHz and a mechanical temperature range of -55degC +125degC. They are available in mezzanine edge mount and basecard and cable configurations. For more information, go to NanoRF Optical Hybrid Modules , which includes the complete list of the features offered by TE and choices.
