Olimex has recently introduced the STMP157-BASE-SOM-EXT system-on-module (SoM), powered by STMicroelectronics’ STM32MP157 dual-core Cortex-A7 microprocessor. Accompanying this launch is the open-source hardware STMP157-BASE-SOM-EVB evaluation board, designed in KiCAD, to facilitate the development and testing of applications using the SoM.
Features of STMP157-BASE-SOM-EXT System-on-Module
The STMP157-BASE-SOM-EXT SoM boasts an array of features, including 1GB of DDR3 system memory and an EEPROM for Linux configuration. Its power management circuitry ensures efficient operation. The module is equipped with a microprocessor featuring a dual-core Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 800 MHz, an Arm Cortex-M4 real-time core at 209 MHz, and a Vivante 3D GPU supporting OpenGL ES 2.0. Additionally, it includes a user LED, a 24 MHz oscillator, and AXP209 PMIC for power management, all within a compact size of 72 x 48 mm.
Specifications of STMP157-BASE-SOM-EVB Evaluation Board
The STMP157-BASE-SOM-EVB evaluation board is compatible with the STMP157-BASE-SOM-EXT CPU module. It features a MicroSD card slot for storage, HDMI output, and connectors for MIPI and RGB LCD displays. The board includes a 2MP MIPI CSI camera with an OV2640-120 sensor, audio jacks, Gigabit Ethernet port, USB ports, CAN Bus terminal blocks, and various GPIO connectors. It also offers debugging options with UART and JTAG connectors, alongside a reset button, power LED, and flash module connector. The board measures 122 x 106 mm and can be powered through a 5V/2A power barrel jack or a LiPo battery connector with a built-in charging circuit.
Software and Documentation Support
Olimex provides a minimal Debian 11 image with Linux 6.x for the SoM and EVB. Extensive documentation, including a user manual, PDF schematics, and a Linux user guide, are available for the SoM. For the EVB, KiCAD hardware design files, PDF schematics, and a user manual can be found on GitHub.
Pricing and Availability
Olimex is currently accepting pre-orders for both the STM32MP157 SoM and the EVB, each priced at 30 Euros. A complete kit, including the system-on-module and carrier board, is available for 60 Euros. Shipping for these products is scheduled to commence on November 30.
Implications for Developers and Innovators
