Onsemi (Nasdaq ON) the leader in sensing and intelligent power technologies, today announced it has signed a strategic partnership together with German Volkswagen AG (VW) to supply semiconductors and modules that will enable an all-electric vehicle (EV) inverter solution for traction for VW’s next generation platform family. The semiconductors form part of the overall system optimization, and offer the solution to the rear and front traction inverters of Volkswagen models. VW models.

As part of the deal, onsemi will deliver in the beginning it’s EliteSiC 1200 V traction inverter power modules. These EliteSiC module’s power is pin-to-pin compatible , allowing you to easily adapt the system to different powers and types of motors. Teams from both companies have been working for over an entire year to improve the performance of the power module for the next generation of platform with prototypes in testing and development.

“The superior performance and quality of onsemi’s traction inverter modules together with our joint efforts to create the best system solution enable us to deliver the outstanding driving experience and quality customers expect from a VW group vehicle,” said Karsten Schnake, the head of the strategic and operational taskforce on semiconductors called COMPASS within Volkswagen AG. “onsemi’s extensive portfolio of smart sensors and power solutions makes it possible to provide cutting-edge technologies and features on our EVs starting with the traction inverter, and even beyond. Beyond this landmark, onsemi with its balanced manufacturing facility layout across Europe, the U.S., Asia and Europe as well as that in Czech Republic, is the ideal choice to assist our strategic markets with high-voltage solutions for all applications as well as other solutions.”

The company has 19 wafer fabrication as well as manufacturing facilities, onsemi provides VW with more than 500 devices – including IGBTs MOSFETS and image sensors as well as powered management circuits (PMICs). Alongside its broad product line, onsemi has a vertical silicon carbide (SiC) production chain that includes the growth of volume boules and wafering, substrate epitaxy device fabrication, top-of-the-line integrated modules as well as discrete packaging solutions, which perfectly support an enshrined supply chain.

“Our broad manufacturing footprint – including a resilient end-to-end SiC supply chain – empowers onsemi to deliver the supply assurance OEMs demand,” said Simon Keeton, executive vice general manager and president of the Power Solutions Group, onsemi. “Our investments in ramping production globally, especially in silicon carbide, further allow us to support VW’s rapidly scaling EV production.”

The inverter solution that is available for EVs is comprised of the onsemi EliteSiC 1200V 3x Half Bridge Modules and this solution is compatible with both axle inverters that cover the entire power range.
