ETAS GmbH and Infineon Technologies Achieve CAVP Certification for Cryptographic Algorithm Suite

Category articles

ETAS GmbH, a renowned provider of Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) solutions, and Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) have reached a significant milestone by successfully certifying their cryptographic algorithm suite under the Cryptographic Algorithm Verification Program (CAVP) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This certification is granted for ESCRYPT CycurHSM, an automotive embedded security software stack implemented on Infineon’s second-generation AURIX™ TC3xx hardware security module (HSM).

Significance of CAVP Certification

The CAVP test protocol, internationally recognized and considered a de facto standard, assesses the quality of cryptographic algorithm implementations, ensuring they function as specified by NIST, a U.S. federal agency responsible for setting cryptographic standards. Achieving CAVP certification signifies that the cryptographic suite implemented meets critical requirements for Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) certification, a benchmark standard for cryptographic software set by the U.S. federal government.

Impact on Automotive Security

Mark Elkins, Onboard Security Operational Unit Concept and Delivery Lead of ETAS, states that the CAVP certification reflects ETAS and Infineon’s commitment to delivering top-tier security solutions. It simplifies the validation process for automotive OEMs globally, guaranteeing the installation of advanced security products in vehicles. Thomas Schneid, Senior Director Software, Partnership & Ecosystem Management at Infineon Technologies, also emphasizes that this certification enhances customer confidence in Infineon’s MCU products and the software solutions developed within their partner ecosystem.

About ESCRYPT CycurHSM

ESCRYPT CycurHSM is a robust automotive embedded security software stack that forms a security trust anchor using the HSM on automotive microcontrollers. It addresses complex OEM security requirements and is deployable in any automotive electronic control unit (ECU), including domain controllers. ESCRYPT CycurHSM facilitates seamless integration into any AUTOSAR stack or bootloader and is also applicable for non-AUTOSAR systems.

Features of AURIX TC3xx HSM

Infineon’s second-generation AURIX TC3xx HSM, featured across the AURIX TC3xx MCU family, supports the CAVP validated cryptographic algorithm implementations, benefiting from integrated crypto accelerators. The CAVP validation of ESCRYPT CycurHSM V2.7.13 applies to the entire AURIX TC3xx family, showcasing the HSM’s capability to uphold validated cryptographic algorithms.

Advancing Automotive Applications

The collaboration between ETAS and Infineon, as demonstrated by this certification, is a testament to their ability to meet the demands of the evolving automotive market. The integration of advanced cryptographic algorithms in automotive applications is crucial for enhancing security and trust in increasingly connected and software-defined vehicles.
