Diodes Incorporated Launches High-Performance LDO Voltage Regulator for Noise-Sensitive Applications

Category articles

Diodes Incorporated (NASDAQ: DIOD), has unveiled their latest technological innovation: the AP7179D low dropout voltage regulator with 3A capacity. This cutting-edge regulator was specifically created to deliver exceptional performance for noise sensitive applications across industries.

One of the hallmarks of the AP7179D’s impressive capabilities is its 4.4uVRMS operation at an output voltage of 0.8V. This low noise floor makes it suitable for applications that demand precision and reliability, such as SerDes, RF components, data converters or converters with minimal interference – such as in high-speed communications equipment, medical devices, test and measurement devices or video applications.

The versatility of the AP7179D knows no bounds; it can seamlessly integrate with an array of hardware including remote radio units (RRUs), outdoor backhaul units, mMIMO active antenna systems, ultrasound scanners radar systems and lab/field instrumentation.

One of the AP7179D’s standout features is its exceptional output accuracy, boasting +-1% across line, load and temperature variations for consistent and reliable performance even under demanding conditions. This level of precision ensures high levels of consistency across lines and loads as well as temperature variations.

The AP7179D’s dropout voltage is equally impressive, reaching 180mV at 3A load current – meaning it is capable of performing across a broad voltage conversion range and has an impressively low noise floor. Furthermore, this device features a low-noise reference and error amplifier to further minimize noise floor levels.

Noise rejection is a key part of voltage regulation, and the AP7179D excels in this respect. Boasting an impressive 40dB power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) at 500kHz, it significantly reduces input supply noise from reaching its output ensuring power remains clean and free from interference.

This device provides two flexible output voltage selection modes. Pin programming enables output voltages between 0.8V to 3.95V, or it can be adjusted via an external resistor divider to produce output voltages ranging from 0.8V to 5.5V. These flexible options help minimize additional components required, thus simplifying design complexity.

The AP7179D’s low output noise not only mitigates power-supply-generated phase noise but also minimizes clock jitter; making it an excellent choice for high-performance processors such as FPGAs, ASICs and DSPs.

Diodes Incorporated’s AP7179D LDO voltage regulator represents a remarkable advancement in power regulation technology. Boasting unmatched precision, low noise levels, and adaptability capabilities, the AP7179D LDO voltage regulator stands out among competitors when applied in applications where clean, reliable power is essential. As industries demand ever higher-performing components to meet industry requirements for increased productivity.

What Is Low-Dropout (LDO)

A Low-Dropout (LDO) voltage regulator is an electronic component designed to help stabilize and regulate the output voltage of power supplies. “Low Dropout” refers to the minimum drop in output voltage that an LDO can tolerate while still meeting your specified output voltage requirement.

LDO regulators can be especially useful when stable and precise output voltage is desired, yet input voltage varies or does not significantly exceed desired output voltage. Traditional linear voltage regulators usually require greater differences between input and output voltage for proper functioning. LDOs offer an ideal solution in such instances.

Key characteristics of LDO voltage regulators include:

Low Dropout Voltage: LDOs feature low dropout voltage differences between input and output voltage, typically on the order of hundreds millivolts, making them suitable for applications where input voltage exceeds desired output voltage by only slightly more than desired output voltage.

Precise Voltage Regulation: LDOs provide precise voltage regulation, making them suitable for noise-sensitive components or applications where maintaining consistent voltage levels is key.

Low Output Noise: LDOs typically feature low output noise levels, making them suitable for powering sensitive electronic components such as analog circuits, RF components and data converters.

Efficiency: While LDOs may not be as energy efficient as switching regulators, they tend to outshone traditional linear regulators when voltage drop is minimal.

Simplicity: LDOs are relatively straightforward and straightforward methods of voltage regulation that require less external components compared to some of their alternatives.

LDO voltage regulators can be found in various electronic devices, including mobile phones, portable electronics, audio amplifiers and precision measurement equipment, where stable and noise-free voltage regulation are essential to proper operation.
