STMicroelectronics introduces single-channel load switches for applications with high startup current

STMicroelectronics has announced one-channel models of their high-side programmable switches that include they are the IPS1025H and the IPS1025H-30. They come with built-in protections for overload, undervoltage and overtemperature, these switches allow the intelligent control of resistive, capacitive or inductive loads that draw a high start-up current. The current limit that is programmed internally differs between the IPS1025H-32 and the IPS1025H 32.

Its IPS1025H limitation is 2.5A and 5.7A for the IPS1025H 32. Apart from the primary current limit, each switch also has another limit that can be programmed by the user to handle capacitive loads that have a an initial high start-up current. The limit’s duration and value are determined by external resistors as well as capacitors. With a wide supply and voltage between 8V and 60V, and capable of sustaining up to 65V at the pin that is used for input, these small devices guarantee reliability for industrial use. Common applications for the IPS1025H include controlling loads by PLC module and applications in factory automation equipment like I/O devices and CNC equipment.

The IPS1025H-32model, which has a larger maximum current limit is perfect to be used with unidirectional motors in machines like vending machines. Its integrated MOSFET switch has a very low Rds(on) (greater than 25m, up the TJ limit of 125 degrees) that results in an energy efficiency that is high and low thermal dissipation. With single-pulse avalanche energies more than one joule at 2 A The MOSFET improves reliability when handling loads that are inductive. A built-in active clamp allows for quick desagnetization.

ST’s new programmable switches have comprehensive built-in protection and diagnostics that enhance security and reliability by tackling overvoltage, undervoltage short circuit, overload ground, or supply rail disconnect. Individual fault signaling indicates overload and junction-overtemperature events. A second sensor is available to guard against temperature overheating in the case. The switches are compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 ESD, IEC 61000-4-4, and IEC 61000-4-5 standards for ESD as well as fast-transient and surge protection. Demonstration boards and the software are available for quick testing. The boards consist of X-NUCLEO OUT05A1 and the X-NUCLEOOUT06A1 digital output expansion boards that work with STM32 Nucleo Development boards, as well as the driver software for the X-CUBE-OUT5 software program that enhances the capabilities of STM32.

Source code for a graphical user interface (STSW-IFAPGUI) is also available, which helps users realize an entire industrial-automation environment on the desktop. The IPS1025H and IPS1025H-32 are both in production right now and are available in PowerSSO-24 starting at $3.51 for 1000 units.
