STMicroelectronics simplifies high-efficiency two-port USB-PD adapters with ST-ONEMP digital controller

STMicroelectronics has expanded its highly integrated and energy-saving ST-ONE range comprising USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) digital controllers with the ST-ONEMP that supports the use of two outputs for power. The ST-ONEMP builds on the world’s first ST-ONE technology that integrates the Arm(r) Cortex(r)-M0and microcontroller, energy-efficient and non-complementary active flyback controller with clamp, and USB-PD 3.1 interface in one package. Utilizing galvanic isolation between primary and secondary-side circuitry ST-ONE architecture significantly simplifies the design and construction for USB-PD powered adapters.

This time, with the addition of an option for sharing power, the ST-ONEMP makes it easier to implement an additional output, in addition to the USB-PD output, enhancing the flexibility and ease of use for users. Within the ST-ONEMP, the Cortex M0+ MCU is integrated into the secondary side. It comes with 64KB of Flash to customize the USB-PD protocol as well as software for power conversion. USB-PD 3.1 PPS certified firmware comes loaded, allowing an easy solution for standard applications. The MCU is the controller for the synchronous rectifier and flyback converter, and is designed for non-complementary, zero-voltage active-clamp topology that allows for higher power and greater efficiency than the conventional quasi-resonant flowback. The ST-ONEMP integrates together with ST’s MasterGaN Power technology that is comprised of ST’s gallium-nitride (GaN) broad-bandgap power transistors, which have built-in gate driver. ST’s GaN technology can operate with higher frequencies than traditional MOSFETs made of silicon, allowing adapters to provide more power and higher efficiency, ensuring that they meet the most recent ecodesign guidelines. ST has created its EVLONEMP reference design that combines the ST-ONEMP technology and MASTERGAN4 to make an AC/DC 65W and 10W adapter that weighs the same size to a single port 20W smartphone charger.

High efficiency, at 94%, can be two percentage higher than the standard 2-port adapters, and the PCB’s surface is half of its size. OEMs are able to offer eco-friendly products that conserve energy and decrease the use of plastic by permitting smaller enclosure sizes.
