STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) is a world-class semiconductor company serving customers in a variety of electronic devices is pleased to announce that it has received EMVCo1 approval for their STPay-Topaz Bio fingerprint-based payment system. The certification confirms that the platform is secure system and its compatibility in conjunction with other payment platforms. Mastercard and Visa Payment schemes are certified anticipated by the beginning of 2023.

This achievement makes STPay-Topaz Bio and the hardware used to make it the first one-stop shop EMVCo-certified platform to include biometric-secured elements and a an operating system that is secure (OS). Biometric payments cards is expected to expand by more than 200% CAGR until 2026. “Card issuers all over the world can now benefit from our vetted STPay platform to bring innovative products quickly to market secured by biometric authentication that’s highly robust and simple to use,” said Laurent Degauque Marketing Director Secure Microcontroller Division, STMicroelectronics. “The secured element IC that is the foundation of this solution draws on our experience in hardware security to protect computing as well as Internet-of-Things (IoT) apps. It is designed for contact and non-contact transaction.” The ST31N600 Secure element IC is a state-of-the-art security solution for applications that use card payments and other sensitive processes.

They include biometric template matching to allow cardholder authentication. It uses software libraries created with Fingerprint Cards AB (Fingerprints(tm)). The ST31N600 has an encrypted OS as well as the most up-to-date Arm(r) SecurCore(r) design for safe microcontrollers. Additionally, developers can add value-added features to cards by securely connecting different kinds of peripherals. In conjunction with ST’s STM32L443 ultra-low power general-purpose microcontroller, in a module that is compliant to EMV(r) standards, the STPay-Topaz-Bio offers a cost-effective Biometric Systems-on-Card (BSoC) system. The STM32L443 manages non-sensitive elements like managing the card’s fingerprint sensor and provides seamless experience for customers. Additionally, it has energy harvesting to allow battery-free operation, STPay Topaz-Bio is compliant with EMV ISO 7816, ISO 14443 specifications for contact and contactless cards.
