ON Semiconductor Launches Innovative AR0822 Image Sensor with Embedded eHDR and Low-Power Features for Harsh Lighting Conditions and IoT Applications

Category articles

ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ON), a leading provider of intelligent power and sensing technologies, has recently launched the AR0822, an innovative image sensor designed to meet the challenges of harsh lighting conditions. With its embedded High Dynamic Range (eHDR) feature and optimized near-infrared (NIR) response, the AR0822 is perfect for security and surveillance, body cameras, doorbell cameras, and robotics. The sensor’s low-power architecture and Wake-on-Motion features are designed to significantly reduce system power consumption.

The optimized near-infrared feature of the AR0822 is specifically designed to improve its sensitivity to near-infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. This feature enables the sensor to capture high-quality images with enhanced sensitivity to near-infrared light, making it ideal for surveillance and security cameras operating in low-light conditions.

The AR0822 is an 8-megapixel stacked 1/1.8−inch back-side illuminated CMOS digital image sensor that is capable of capturing 4K video at 60 frames-per-second with a rolling-shutter readout. The sensor’s embedded HDR functionality reduces system bandwidth and processor power while delivering exceptional image quality through intelligent linearization with exposure combination that compensates for motion and flickering light sources.

The sensor also offers sophisticated camera functions such as binning/windowing and enhanced NIR sensitivity. Designed for rugged environments, it offers an operating temperature range from minus 30 C to 85 C junction temperature.

The AR0822 is an excellent value proposition for customers, as it enables them to achieve the 120 dB of eHDR they need with lower system power and cost, according to Ross Jatou, senior vice president and general manager, Intelligent Sensing Group, onsemi.

The AR0822 is an intelligent image sensor that utilizes an image signal processor (ISP) to enhance digital images captured by the sensor. The ISP performs various operations on the raw image data, such as noise reduction, color correction, sharpening, and compression. In the context of the AR0822 image sensor, the embedded HDR functionality helps to reduce the workload on the ISP by intelligently linearizing the exposure combination, compensating for motion and flickering light sources, and delivering exceptional image quality.

Overall, the AR0822 is a game-changer in the world of image sensors, providing high-quality images with enhanced sensitivity to near-infrared light while reducing system power consumption and cost. Its innovative features make it an excellent choice for a variety of applications, including security and surveillance, body cameras, doorbell cameras, and robotics.
