Automotive dual high-side gate driver EiceDRIVER 2ED4820-EM with SPI protects dependable 48 V battery systems

Battery systems that are 48 V are employed in various, expanding segments of the market, such as Mild hybrid electrical Vehicles trucks, e-wheelers, and solar panel battery packs. The Li-ion battery systems have to be secured against positive and negative voltages. Furthermore, these batteries should be able to swiftly and effectively remove themselves from loads in a matter of milliseconds in the event that they experience an overload. Because a battery might not be devoted to just one vehicle, the status diagnosis and protection threshold configuration is essential.

To meet these needs, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX/OTCQX IFNNY) announces the EiceDRIVER 2ED4820-EM which is a smart gate driver that has an SPI interface. It is a perfect complement to the Infineon 80/100 V MOSFETs with OptiMOS. It’s also a great solution for switching high-current loads within a 48-volt board net.

The smart dual-channel high-side gate drivers 2ED4820-EM of the EiceDRIVER APD family is able to withstand negative voltages up to Vbat as low as 90 V and that exceed +105 V. These different voltage conditions could be triggered by the short circuit or failure to connect the contact. In addition, the new driver comes with an amplifier that senses current to measure the low or high sides. Low-side measurement can help cut down on costs, PCB size and the power dissipation overall, because the shunt resistor from the management of the battery could be utilized. By integrating two output channels, it’s possible to control a separate pre-charge pathway or split both the discharging and charging route of the battery, also reducing the size of the PCB and the overall cost.

Availability

The 2ED4820 is available right now. It is certified PRO-SIL ISO26262-ready and includes a safety application note that will facilitate its use for functional safety applications. In order to speed up the process of designing an evaluation board as well as reference boards equipped with EiceDRIVER APD 2ED4820 are available for purchase. Additional information and models for simulation can be found here. To make it easy to integrate an instructional video is also available.
